What You Need and Want to Know About Fajas

Elias Recovery stage 2 authentic Colombian faja for bbl and liposuction

Recovery after plastic surgery is a major concern of people planning to undergo surgery.  Interestingly, wearing a high-grade compression garment post operatively is one of the most effective ways to ensure you get the best results.  You may wonder how and why this garment works.  Continue reading to find all the information you need to know about fajas and their use as post-surgical compression garments.

Fajas originate from South America with deep roots in Colombian culture.  In fact, these ‘girdles’ are a staple in many Colombian women’s wardrobes.  Over the past few decades, fajas have also become a staple in the United States, especially in beauty and cosmetic surgery communities.

These features create an hourglass figure while avoiding compression in the areas where fat transfer occurs.

What are fajas made of?

Authentic Colombian fajas are imported from Colombia and are constructed from powernet material, a combination of lycra polyester, and lycra cotton.

When are fajas used?

Fajas are commonly used after having body contouring procedures, cosmetic surgery, after childbirth during the post-partum period and daily use to create a smooth feminine silhouette under clothing.  In the post-operative period, fajas help the body recover fast by minimizing edema and swelling during the healing process.

How tight should these garments be?

The garment should be tight enough to contour your body.  Also, the correct amount of compression will reduce water retention and reduce inflammation.  You should be able to breath easily and perform normal daily activities while wearing a faja.

Fajas that are too tight can cause skin irritation and can interfere with blood circulation.  Be sure to size your faja properly and not too small.

What surgeries require post op compression and faja usage?

Fajas are most commonly used after liposuction.  This includes liposuction of the abdomen, sides or flanks, back, arms and legs.

There are a variety of faja styles and each style has specific benefits.  For instance, knee length fajas are great to use after liposuction of the abdomen, flanks, back, and thighs.  Fajas with sleeves are great after liposuction of the arms.  This type of faja can eliminate the need for compression sleeves and a separate compression garment. Mid length or mid thigh fajas are commonly used after liposuction 360.

In addition to liposuction, the second most common post operative indication for compression garment use is after undergoing a Brazilian butt lift often referred to as a BBL.  A Brazilian butt lift involves liposuction with fat transfer to the buttocks and/or hips.  Fajas are great to use after a BBL because they provide the compression needed for body contouring while limiting the pressure on the transferred fat.  Thong style fajas and fajas with mesh in the buttock region are great to wear after a Brazilian butt lift.  Abdominoplasty/tummy tuck is another indication for faja usage.

Remember that all post-operative patients should consult their surgeon regarding when to use high grade compressive garments.
